True South - Heights Boulevard Sculpture Project

Gus Kopriva, owner of Redbud Gallery and Chris Silkwood, Artist and Community Activist are proud to present the second temporary sculpture exhibit on the esplanade of Heights Boulevard.  The project is titled “True South” and will be available for public viewing from March 15 – December 15, 2015. A total of eight sculptures will be featured from the 400 block to the 1800 block.

The success of the first temporary sculpture exhibit entitled “True North” was an overwhelming success. It brought thousands of visitors to the community who posed for terrific photo opportunities with family and friends. Facebook, Twitter and numerous other social media sites posted photographs to fuel memories for years to come. The Houston Chronicle named it one of Houston’s most popular public art exhibits.

When Gus and Chris decided to take on the second exhibit it was an easy decision following a bombardment of requests from residents and visitors to the Heights.  The field of artists has expanded to Texas sculptors and includes:  Joe Barrington, Mark Bradford, Tara Conley, Kermit Eisenhut, Tim Glover, Sharon Kopriva, Hans Molzberger and Emily Sloan.

A special “thank you” goes out to our planning committee:  Jim Bennett, Simon Eyles, Minnette Boesel, cultural liaison to the Mayor’s office, Joe Turner, Executive Director of the Parks Department, Renissa Garza Montalvo, Parks Department, Jenni Rebecca Stephenson, Fresh Arts.

The goal of “True South” sculpture project is to present a whimsical exhibition that is a representation of Texas contemporary art to run along the esplanade of Heights Boulevard, a declared scenic right of way. We hope you enjoy it.
