Songs and books have been written about what has been called, “a Houston thoroughfare that has garnered a more negative reputation than any other in the last 40 years or so…” Gary Griffin takes a look at the different stories, and provides scenic context as a backdrop to an area devoid of new construction, development or gentrification, yet still thriving and existing. All on what seems to be a cash-based underground economy ranging from legitimate businesses such as pawn shops and cantinas, to much more sinister sources such as human trafficking. Not a strict documentary, but rather a stylized version of places, events and nostalgic elements, as well as evocative imagery such as a grouping of “luchadoras”, to add tension, relevance and contrast to the harsh street images.

Gary Griffin is a native Houstonian, born and raised in the Heights area, whose documentary style of photography seems to carry a majestic and iconic quality, regardless of subject matter.
