Redbud Gallery is pleased to present the work of Alfredo Romero, a Spanish artist based in Mexico. His current body of work focuses on the facades of neighborhoods in different cities throughout Mexico.  He transforms murals promoting advertisements for products, such as Coca Cola or Corona, found on walls outside buildings into pieces of art for inside walls. His work has been recently featured throughout Latin America and Europe.

The technique he uses is called strappo which is a detachment of wall paintings from a structure of which it formed part of. The removal is a very intricate process after which he modifies the piece with his own interpretation by infusing gold leaf layers.

“There is nothing more interesting than to discover and contemplate what we find in our surroundings and to impart new meaning by spending time toiling with it. I think of these facades, which have served as popular advertising for decades and are deteriorating, as a renewed canvas to breathe fresh life into.

‘Vestiges of Our Time’ was born with the objective to document and preserve popular labels that have been part of our lives and transform them into works of art with new urban manifestations.

‘Vestiges of Our Time’ is a piece of history, a memory, a meeting point, a kiss, an arm, a farewell, an artistic redo.”
