"Figure With Caryatid" water color, 5"x 7", Basilios Poulos, 2006

Basilios Poulos has achieved a cross-cultural synthesis in which abstraction (the Modernist American way) and representation (the Classical Greek way) merge through the mediation of architectural references.  Planes, surfaces, angles, and curves are fitted together with a masterful grasp of Modernist aesthetics, while the references to antiquity exhibit a melancholy reflection on lost sources and the
possibility of rebirth from them.  At a time when history seems strangely broken, or out of its proper orientation, Poulos has found a path into the future by working his
way through the past.
